Archery at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will begin on Friday, June 23 and run until Saturday, July 31. It will have five different events at the World Games, including individual events (men and women), team events and mixed team events.
As many as 64 archers participate in the individual events before it progresses to the knockouts. The draws for the same are decided through seeding, meaning that the top-seeded archer is most likely to compete against the 64th seeded archer.
The team events, however, see a different format. Here, the top four seeded teams get an automatic bye to the quarter-finals. The rest of the teams, seeded between 5-12, will compete for the remaining spots in the quarter-final.
For Tokyo 2020 Olympics, India have a four-member team comprising Pravin Jadhav, Atanu Das, Tarundeep Rai - all competing in Men's Individual and Recurve Team events - and Deepika Kumari, competing in Women's Recurve Individual event.
Deepika Kumari is the only women archer representing India at the World Games. Currently a world number 1 in her category, she will be one of India’s medal hopefuls having won three gold medals at the World Cup stage 3 in Paris. This is going to be Deepika’s third appearance in the Olympic Games having represented India at the London 2012 Olympics and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil.
Furthermore, a lot is expected from Atanu Das as well. The 29-year-old will head to Tokyo on the back of two gold medals from the 2021 Guatemala City World Cup (individual event) and the 2021 Paris World Cup (mixed team event).
He is also expected to line alongside Deepika Kumari in the mixed team events if the pair qualifies for the event. This will be determined after the ranking rounds.
The individual competitions will see 64 archers beginning the action with a ranking round that will have the archers shoot 72 arrows. They will then be ranked by score for their seeding in the single-elimination bracket.
