Weightlifting events at Tokyo 2020 Olympics will start on June 24 and conclude on August 4. The sport will have 14 different weight categories lined-up at the upcoming Summer Games featuring men’s and women’s sections.
As many as 196 athletes will participate in the weightlifting events at Tokyo Olympics with each competing nation being allowed to enter a maximum of eight competitors, four men and four women.
All the weightlifting competitions will be held at the Tokyo International Forum.
Since Weightlifting was introduced at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, Soviet Union and China have been the two most successful nations, winning a combined 116 medals among themselves.
China will once again have strong representation in weightlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Apart from China, countries such as the United States, Georgia, South Korea and Colombia are sending their strongest contingent in recent years.
Meanwhile, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will be India’s lone entry in the weightlifting event at Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
After a disappointing finish at Rio 2016, where she couldn't finish following fouls during her attempts, Chanu will be eyeing redemption with a podium finish at Tokyo 2020.
The 26-year-old from Manipur will be a strong medal contender in the women’s 49kg category since China’s Jiang Huihua and world no. 3 RI Song Gum of North Korea won’t compete at Tokyo 2020.
Furthermore, weightlifters from countries such as Thailand and Malaysia have been denied participation on account of multiple doping charges.
