Basketball at Tokyo 2020 Olympics will start on June 24 and conclude on August 8. The sport will have 12 teams competing for the gold medal in the men's and women's basketball events at the Tokyo Olympics.
All the matches are scheduled to be held at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo.
As per the tournament format in both the men's and women's events, 12 participating nations have been divided into three groups of four. In the group stage, each team will compete in a round-robin format as they play all other teams in their group for a total of three games.
The winners and runners-up of each group and the two best third-place teams will qualify for the knockout stage.
Since basketball was introduced in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, the United States has been the most dominant nation in the quadrennial event. While the US men’s team has bagged a staggering 15 gold medals, the women’s team has claimed eight gold medals.
Both the US men’s and women’s basketball teams head into Tokyo 2020 as the defending champions after clinching gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James have represented the US men’s basketball team in the previous Olympics.
However, this time around, the United States will face tough competition from other nations and they are no longer guaranteed a medal.
Interestingly, the US men’s basketball team has suffered back-to-back defeats against Nigeria and Australia in the exhibition matches leading up to the Tokyo Olympics.
Featuring players such as Kevin Durant and Draymond Green at Tokyo 2020, the US men’s basketball team will look to secure their fourth consecutive gold medal in the Summer Games.
