Athletic events at Tokyo 2020 Olympics will begin from Friday, July 30 and run on till Sunday, August 8.
At the Olympic Games, the Athletics program is divided up into track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking.
The Athletics Federation of India announced 26 athletes who will compete at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, aiming to change India's fortunes in athletics, which hasn't been its strength at the World Games.
This squad includes 16 athletes who will compete in the individual events; five male athletes for the men's 4x400m relay event and two men and three women for the mixed 4x400m relay.
The Indian race walker K.T Irfan was the first Indian athlete to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics; he is one of seven male athletes to represent Kerala at the Olympics. Irfan will compete in his second Olympics after finishing 10th in London 2012.
Dutee Chand will be the flag bearer for India during track and field events, as Hima Das failed to make the cut. The 25-year-old sprinter, who missed a direct qualification for Tokyo 2020 earlier this year, qualified for the 100m and 200m disciplines via the World Rankings quota.
Dutee, ranked World No. 44 in 100m and World No. 51 in 200m, will target an improved performance at the Summer Games to better her record from Rio 2016, where she didn’t move beyond the heats.
Another athlete primed for success is Neeraj Chopra. The 23-year-old javelin thrower, who holds the Indian national record of 88.07 m, won gold at the 2018 Asian Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games and is aiming to go for top honours in his maiden Olympics.
