The 10m air pistol mixed team shooting event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will see India field two teams on Tuesday. The event will be held at the Asaka Shooting Range.
Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary will pair up while Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Abhishek Verma make up India's second team in the event.
All four shooters had disappointing individual outings in their respective single events and they will be eager to put that behind them as they bid for a podium finish in the mixed team event.
Both Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Manu Bhaker failed to make the cut for the final in the women’s 10m air pistol. Bhaker and Deswal finished 12th and 13th respectively in the qualification round. Bhaker’s performance was marred by a technical glitch involving her gun after she had made an impressive start.
Similarly, 31-year old Abhishek Verma failed to go past the men’s qualifiers. Even though Saurabh Chaudhary managed to advance to the final in his singles event by topping the charts with a score of 586 out of 600 in the qualifying round, he eventually finished seventh in the final.
That said, the Indian shooters will have plenty of reasons to be optimistic in the 10m air pistol mixed team shooting event.
Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary had won gold at the New Delhi World Cup in March, while Yashaswini Deswal and Abhishek Verma had to settle for a bronze. Bhaker and Chaudhary also bagged silver at the ISSF World Cup in Osijek, Croatia in June.
The 10m air pistol mixed team shooting will see the teams first contesting in the qualification 1 stage before the top eight advance to qualification 2. After the qualification 2 stage, the top two teams will battle it out for the gold medal, while the third and fourth-placed pairs will be vying for the bronze.
