India’s Satish Kumar will face reigning world and Asian champion Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals of the men’s super heavyweight (+91kg) category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Sunday, August 1.
The 32-year-old Indian pugilist, who is the country’s first super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer to compete in the Olympics, sailed into the quarter-finals on his debut at the quadrennial event as he defeated Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.
The two-time Asian Championships bronze medalist Satish put on an impressive show to beat Brown by a 4:1 split verdict.
Satish, who is just one win away from securing India’s third medal at the Tokyo Olympics, will next face a difficult challenge against his Uzbekistan rival in the upcoming bout.
Bakhodir Jalolov has two world championship medals and also bagged three gold medals at Asian Championships.
The 27-year-old is also a professional boxer and has an 8-0 win record, all by knocking out his rivals.
Interestingly, Satish Kumar has never beaten Jalolov, having faced his Uzbekistan opponent on two occasions.
While the Indian pugilist lost by a split decision in the Indian Open final in 2018, he was defeated 5-0 in the Asian Olympic Qualifier held in March last year.
