World No. 7 and Indian badminton sensation PV Sindhu will begin her Tokyo 2020 Olympics campaign with a Women’s Singles match against Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova in Group J. The Israeli is ranked 58th in the world.
Sindhu is the only female shuttler from India to qualify for badminton at Tokyo 2020. She’s one of India’s top medal prospects and will be hoping to go one better than at Rio 2016 where she lost to Spaniard Carolina Marin in the final and had to settle for a silver medal.
The Indian shuttler has been drawn as the sixth-seed in a relatively easy Group J alongside Polikarpova and World No. 34 Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi.
Sindhu - the reigning world champion in women’s singles - has a golden opportunity to go for the elusive Olympic gold medal in the absence of superstar Carolina Marin, who suffered a knee injury and will not compete at Tokyo 2020.
"Marin was a strong contender for the gold and her absence will be felt. So many players will have the advantage, not just Sindhu. Sindhu is definitely in with a chance for the gold but there are at least six other girls who can claim the title," former India chief coach Vimal Kumar told PTI last month.
Sindhu became the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships in 2019 and will be looking to become a two-time Olympic medal winner at Tokyo 2020.
