Lovlina Borgohain will hope to rewrite Indian boxing history when she faces Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli in the semi-finals of the women’s welterweight (64-69kg) category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Wednesday, August 4.
The 23-year-old Assamese boxer, the third Indian boxer to ensure a podium finish after Vijender Singh (Beijing 2008) and MC Mary Kom (London 2012), aims to become the first Indian to reach the finals of a boxing event at the Summer Games.
Lovlina made the semi-finals following a 4-1 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen in the quarter-finals. Busenaz Surmeneli, the reigning world champion, is coming off a dominant 5-0 quarter-final win against Ukraine’s Anna Lysenko.
The Indian contingent had nine boxers (men and women) who competed at Tokyo 2020, including MC Mary Kom. However, the remaining eight made early exits from Tokyo 2020.
