Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has announced that he will retire from the longest format of the game after the ongoing one-off Test against Bangladesh.
Having played just two Tests – apart from the on-going game - since making his debut against India in 2018, it is believed that the all-rounder has taken the decision because he wants to focus more on the limited-over format.
“Yes, he (Nabi) will retire after the ongoing Test match,” Afghanistan team manager Nazim Jar Abdurrahimzai confirmed to Cricbuzz.
Nabi’s credentials in both ODI and T20 cricket are supreme, to say the least, and the fact that he acquires No.3 spot in ODI and T20I all-rounder rankings is the perfect specimen of it.
The 34-year-old captained Afghanistan in their first major tournament; the 2014 Asia Cup, and followed his tenure during his team’s quest in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2015 Cricket World Cup. A poor form during the latter, however, saw him resigning from the post in 2015.
A middle-order batsman, Nabi’s T20 tenure with Afghanistan has been exceptional thus far. And with the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup a year away, the all-rounder decided to draw curtains to his Test career.
As for Afghanistan, the Rashid Khan-led side scored 342 in their first innings and have given Bangladesh a run for their money with the ball. And following their Bangladesh tour, Afghanistan will lock horns with West Indies in the one-off Test, which will begin from November 27 in Dehradun.
