The Khelo India Youth Games 2022 kicked off on January 30, 2023, in Madhya Pradesh with the kabaddi events, slated for the under-18 age group, set to start on February 5.
The third edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, originally slated for 2022, is being held this year after the preceding edition was postponed due to COVID-19.
The KIYG is a flagship of the Indian government under the Khelo India scheme that aims to identify talent at the grassroots level.
KIYG 2022 is being held in eight cities in Madhya Pradesh and in New Delhi. The kabaddi events, for both boys and girls, will be held at the Abhay Prashal Sports Club in the state capital Indore.
Over 5,000 athletes from the 36 states and Union Territories will participate in the Khelo India Youth Games this year and will compete for 1,936 medals.
Eight medals will be awarded in the kabaddi events: a gold, silver and two bronze medals in each of the boys’ and girls’ categories. A league stage will be held before four teams, in each category, head to the semi-finals.
The KIYG 2022 kabaddi finals will be played on February 9.
Himachal Pradesh will step into the tournament as the defending champions in the boys’ category, having beaten home team Haryana in the final at Panchkula last year.
Haryana, however, lifted the title in the girls’ division last time out after beating Maharashtra in the summit clash.
The Khelo India Youth Games 2022 will conclude on February 11.
