The Kenya men’s kabaddi national team rode on an all-round performance to thrash Uganda in the Africa Kabaddi 2024 Championship final to clinch the coveted title in Kasarani.
Star raider James Kamweti produced a sensational display to help Kenya defeat Uganda 44-23 in the summit clash.
With the dominant win, the David Silishia-led Kenya have qualified for the upcoming Kabaddi World Cup.
Earlier, James Kamweti managed a couple of successful raids as Kenya took a 20-13 lead at half time.
In the second half, the hosts continued their dominance as they bagged a total of 24 points while the Uganda men’s kabaddi national team added just 10 more points to register a comprehensive win in the end.
James Kamweti was later adjudged the Man of the Match for his brilliant performance in the final while compatriot Samuel Wafula was named the defender of the Africa Kabaddi 2024 Championship.
Aftter his match-winning display, accomplished raider Kamweti later claimed that Kenya are now the African giants in Kabaddi.
“Winning this championship proves that we are the giants in Africa when it comes to Kabaddi. We are excited to take on top teams like India and Iran at the World Cup," Kamweti was quoted as saying to Citizen Digital.
Meanwhile, Kenya captain David Silishia praised his defenders for their performance in the final.
"Our defense strategy was key to keeping the Ugandans at bay. Every player executed their role with precision, and it paid off," David Silishia said to Citizen Digital.
"We are thrilled with this victory and are already gearing up for the World Cup. With the right support and preparation, we are confident of making a significant impact on the global stage," he added.
Having clinched the Africa Kabaddi 2024 Championship, Kenya have showcased their growing stature in the sport. Earlier, Kenya won the bronze medal at the Bangabandhu Cup in Bangladesh.
