The fourth edition of the UEFA Nations League football tournament will kickstart on Thursday, September 5 with Azerbaijan facing Sweden in a League C game. The match will be telecast live in India at 9:30 PM IST.
Defending champion and UEFA EURO 2024 winner Spain and UEFA Nations League 2018-19 champion Portugal will also be in action on Thursday against Serbia and Croatia respectively. Meanwhile, France, who won the 2020-21 edition, are up against Italy on September 6.
The latest edition of the UEFA Nations League will have a total of 54 teams split into four leagues based on their international ranking. Three leagues A, B and C will contain four groups of four teams each whereas League D will have two groups of three teams.
Each team will play two games each against every other team in their respective group on a home and away basis.
Teams in League A will vie for the UEFA Nations League Final that is scheduled to be held in June 2025. All the four group winners and runners-up in League A will play a double-legged quarterfinals with the winners proceeding to play the semifinals.
Leagues B, C and D, meanwhile, will compete against each other for promotion or relegation to a higher or lower league.
Cristiano Ronaldo will once again headline Portugal who are placed in Group A1 alongside Croatia, Scotland and Poland. Group A2 will have France, which had an underwhelming EURO 2024 campaign, alongside Italy, Belgium and Israel.
EURO 2024 host Germany will start life afresh after Toni Kroos’s retirement and are placed in A3 with the Netherlands, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Meanwhile, Spain, fresh from its continental glory, are grouped with Serbia, Denmark and Switzerland.
Spain won the last edition of the UEFA Nations League in 2023 beating Croatia on penalties in the final.
