The UEFA Europa League playoffs were introduced for the 2021-22 edition, replacing the round of 32 matches which were in place before. Earlier, all the teams that qualified from the league stage to the knockouts featured in the round of 32 matches. However, the latest amendment now gives table-toppers of each group an advantage, to progress straight into the round of 16.
The teams that finish second in their respective groups of the Europa League, will face the teams that finished third in the UEFA Champions League in a playoff. The winners of these playoffs will meet the Europa League table-toppers in the round of 16.
Manchester United finished second in their group, losing out on the top spot to Spanish side Real Sociedad by goal difference. They will face Barcelona, who finished third to Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in their Champions League group. This match between former Champions League winners will be the headline clash of the UEFA Europa League playoffs 2022-23.
Sevilla, who have won theEuropa League title six times, are back in the competition having finished third in their Champions League, pipped by Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund. They will face Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.
Ajax Amsterdam and Juventus are other former Champions League winners taking part in Europa League this season. While Juventus take on Italian side Nantes, Ajax square off against Union Berlin.
