The UEFA Champions League 2024-25 group stage draw will take place in Monaco on Thursday, August 29. The highly-anticipated UCL 2024-25 will start at 9:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).
Organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 will be staged under the new 36-team league phase format.
The UEFA has opted for a Swiss model as the new format will witness a shift away from the group stage in favour of a league table.
As per the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 format, as many as 36 teams will compete in the league phase (former group stage) in comparison to the 32 teams in the previous editions. Hence, four more teams will get an opportunity to compete against the best clubs in Europe.
These 36 participating teams will participate in a single league competition in which all 36 clubs are ranked together.
According to the UCL 2024-25 format, each team will play eight matches in the new league phase, four matches at home and four away.
These qualified teams will be ranked in four seeding pots to determine the eight different opponents.
Each team will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against a team from each pot at home and one away.
The top eight sides from the league phase will directly qualify for the Round of 16 while the teams placed from ninth to 24th will take part in a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition.
Meanwhile, teams that finish 25th or lower will be knocked out from the competition with no access to the UEFA Europa League.
From the round of 16 onwards, the UEFA Champions League will continue to follow its existing format of knockout rounds leading to the final staged at a neutral venue selected by UEFA.
Defending UEFA Champions League winner Real Madrid are placed in Pot 1 while the likes of reigning UEFA Europa League champion Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, Arsenal and AC Milan are clubbed in Pot 2.
On the other hand, the remaining two pots (3 and 4) are populated based on a team’s UEFA club coefficient or ranking.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the teams in their respective pots.
