The first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2021-22 quarter-final round will begin in the early hours of Wednesday, April 6.
Primeira Liga side Benfica are set to host tournament favourites Liverpool while Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid will make a trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City.
The remaining four teams will take the field on Thursday, April 7, where Bayern Munich are scheduled to play Villarreal away from home and Chelsea are to host Real Madrid.
The likes of Benfica and Villarreal have been this year’s surprise packages. The underdogs from Portugal and Spain, respectively, finished second in the group stage before beating two of UCL’s veteran campaigners.
The Aguias locked horns with Ajax in the round of 16 and after a 2-2 first leg result, the team from Portugal rode on Darwin Nunez’s solitary goal to go past the final 16 with an aggregate score of 3-2.
Villarreal, on the other hand, surprised one and all by beating Juventus 3-0 away from home and thus getting better for the Serie A giants 4-1 on aggregate.
As for Liverpool, they beat Inter 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16 while City and Atletico got better of Sporting and Manchester United respectively.
Bayern Munich defeated RB Salzburg and the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid beat Lille and PSG, respectively.
