With the round of 16 stage of Euro 2024 just around the corner, it’s safe to say that the ongoing edition of the UEFA European Championship has been a treat to watch.
Plenty of teams have laid down the marker with their free-flowing style of football that has blown opposition teams away.
The likes of Spain, Portugal, and Germany, in particular, have been easy on the eye with these sides qualifying for the knockouts in style.
While Spain progressed to the round of 16 with a perfect record in the group stage of three wins in three games, Germany are the top-scoring side in the tournament having netted eight goals.
Two of their players, Jamal Musiala and Niclas Fullkrug, are among the top-scoring players in Euro 2024 having netted twice each.
However, somewhat bizarrely the leading goal-scorer in Euro 2024 is currently the own goal. For the unversed, an own goal happens when a player accidentally kicks the ball into their own team’s net.
Over the past 16 editions of the Euro, a total of 20 own goals were scored in the history of the competition by teams.
As many as 11 of these 20 came in the previous edition of the UEFA European Championship that was held in 2021.
However, that record currently seems to be under threat as Euro 2024 has already seen players net seven own goals even before the commencement of the round of 16 stage.
Here, we have a look at all the players who have been unfortunate enough to net own goals in Euro 2024.
