Earlier, Mumbai City defeated Indian Super League (ISL) rivals Chennaiyin FC 5-3 to advance to the semi-finals of Asia’s oldest football tournament. New summer signing and former Jamshedpur forward Greg Stewart netted a stunning hat-trick while India international Lallianzuala Chhangte scored a brace to help Mumbai City clinch a thrilling win in their quarter-final encounter.
ISL 2020-21 winners Mumbai City FC previously finished at the top of Group B standings with seven points from four games to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
Mumbai overcame Indian Navy (4-1), Rajasthan United (5-1) while playing an exciting draw (1-1) against ATK Mohun Bagan. The Islanders were also stunned 3-4 by East Bengal in the ongoing Durand Cup football tournament.
On the other hand, Bengaluru FC advanced to their first Durand Cup final after they edged reigning ISL champions Hyderabad FC 1-0 in the second semi-final at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday.
The Blues opened the scoring courtesy of an unfortunate deflection into the back of the net by Hyderabad FC defender Odei Onaindia in the 30th minute of the game.
Bengaluru FC finished second in the Group A standings with eight points from four matches before overcoming a 10-man Odisha FC in their quarter-final tie.
Led by new manager Simon Grayson, the Sunil Chhetri-led Bengaluru FC have beaten Jamshedpur FC (2-1), Indian Air Force (4-0) while being held by FC Goa (2-2) and Mohammedan (1-1) in their final two group games. The 2018-19 ISL champions secured a nail-biting 2-1 win over Odisha FC in the last eight of the tournament.
Both Mumbai City FC and Bengaluru FC will look to clinch their maiden Durand Cup title on Sunday.
