Football is a game that is won or lost by the margin of goals scored with the goal-scorers often grabbing headlines. The creator of the chance or the assist provider often goes under the radar.
But over a period of time, players who provide the marksmen with inch-perfect passes have also come under the limelight. An assist is a key pass by a player of the team which is in turn put into the net by the scorer.
Assists have been considered in equal terms as goals scored in major tournaments to decide on the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament categories with these awards being decided based on goals plus assists (G+A).

Copa 2024 saw Columbian footballer James Rodriguez go past Argentine superstar Lionel Messi for most assists in a single edition of the Copa America. Rodriguez leads the charts for most assists in Copa America 2024 with six assists.

James Rodriguez (Columbia)
James Rodriguez leads the list with six assists in Copa America 2024, his latest coming in Columbia’s 1-0 win over Uruguay in their semi-final clash. In the process, he also went past Messi’s tally of five assists in Argentina’s title-winning run in the previous Copa edition in 2021, which was then the most managed by a player in a single edition of the tournament.
Rodriguez, who is the only player from Columbia to win the Golden Boot award for the top-scorer at the FIFA World Cup in 2014, has managed six assists and a goal for his country from five matches in the tournament.
Starting with two assists in Columbia’s first game against Paraguay, Rodriguez continued his excellent form with one more assist against Costa Rica before providing two key passes in the team’s quarter-final clash against Panama.
Jon Aramburu (Venezuela)
Jon Aramburu of Venezuela is second on the list of most assists in Copa America 2024 with two assists from three games. He played a key role in Venezuela’s campaign as the team finished on top of Group B with a perfect record.
But Venezuela could not go beyond the quarter-final stage as they lost to Canada 4-3 on penalties after both teams scored a goal each in regulation time.
Alexis Mac Allister (Argentina)
Alexis Mac Allister comes next with two assists from four games in Copa America 2024. The Liverpool midfielder who played a pivotal role in Argentina's FIFA World Cup win in 2022 has come to the fore yet again for La Albiceleste to take them to their third consecutive final appearance after their Copa America 2021 and 2022 FIFA World Cup wins.
Argentina finished as group toppers in Group A of Copa America 2024 with a perfect win record before defeating Ecuador in the quarter-finals on penalties. They overcame Canada in the semi-finals to make it to the summit clash.
