Under newly-appointed head coach José Francisco Molina, Mohun Bagan produced an impressive comeback to defeat Bengaluru FC on penalties in their semi-final clash to secure their place in the Durand Cup 2024 final on Saturday.
Sunil Chhetri converted a penalty in the 43rd minute to put Bengaluru FC in the lead before Vinith Venkatesh made it 2-0 for the Blues.
However, Mohun Bagan later bounced back with goals from Dimitri Petratos and Anirudh Thapa as the match ended 2-2 in regulation time.
Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith later saved two penalties in the shootout to guide the Mariners to back-to-back Durand Cup finals.
Earlier, Mohun Bagan finished at the top of the Durand Cup 2024 Group A standings with seven points from three games.
While José Francisco Molina’s men defeated Downtown Heroes 1-0 in their Durand Cup 2024 opener, they hammered Indian Air Force 6-0 in their second group match.
Meanwhile, their clash against arch-rivals East Bengal was cancelled due to security issues. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal were awarded one point each after the Kolkata derby was abandoned.
The Mariners later pipped Punjab FC on penalties in their quarter-final clash in the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup.
On the other hand, NorthEast United booked their place in the Durand Cup 2024 final with a comprehensive 3-0 win over regional rivals Shillong Lajong at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Monday.
Thoi Singh opened the scoring for NorthEast United in the 13th minute before Moroccan forward Alaeddine Ajaraie doubled the lead for the Highlanders in the 32nd minute. In the second half, NorthEast United took complete control of the game and made it 3-0 courtesy Parthib Gogoi’s strike in additional time.
With the win, NorthEast United scripted history as they reached their first-ever final and will play their maiden Durand Cup final in Kolkata.
Led by head coach Juan Pedro Benali, NorthEast United earlier topped Group E standings with nine points from three matches.
The Highlanders started their Durand Cup 2024 campaign with a 2-0 win over Bodoland FC, and later secured thumping victories over Border Security FC (4-0) and Odisha FC (5-1).
NorthEast United then defeated Army Red 2-0 in their quarter-final tie to secure their place in the last four.
Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan are the most successful team in Durand Cup history with 17 titles and will start as overwhelming favourites against NorthEast United on Saturday.

Liston Colaco, Jason Cummings, Dimitri Petratos and Sahal Abdul Samad scored a goal each for Mohun Bagan. For NorthEast United, Tomi Juric netted a brace.
