On the other hand, East Bengal will aim to bounce back after succumbing to a 2-3 defeat against Turkmenistan’s Altyn Asyr in an AFC Champions League 2 preliminary play-off match at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Wednesday, August 14.
Led by manager Carles Cuadrat, East Bengal have also won both their Group A matches in the ongoing Durand Cup.
The Red and Gold Brigade began their Durand Cup 2024 campaign with a 3-1 win over the Indian Air Force.
East Bengal later beat Downtown Heroes by the same scoreline in their second Group A match.
Saúl Crespo has been the leading goal-scorer for East Bengal in the competition with two goals in as many games.
Both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have six points from two matches, however, the Mariners are placed at the top of the Group A standings due to a better goal difference.
The six group winners and the two best second-placed teams across the six groups will advance to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan are the most successful team in Durand Cup history with 17 titles while last season’s runner-up East Bengal have 16 triumphs.
