I-League club Mohammedan Sporting Club will square off against ISL giants Mumbai City FC in the first semi-final of the Durand Cup 2022 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday, September 14. The match will kick off at 6:00 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).
Under the tutelage of manager Andrey Chernyshov, Mohammedan SC have been one of the most impressive teams in the ongoing edition of Durand Cup. The Black Panthers stormed into the semi-finals after they stunned a star-studded Kerala Blasters outfit 3-0.
After Indian winger Sheikh Faiaz opened the scoring for Mohammedan, Nigerian footballer Abiola Dauda netted a brace on debut in the second half to help his side move into the semi-finals of Asia’s oldest football tournament.
Earlier, Mohammedan qualified for the quarter-finals after finishing at the top of the Group A with 10 points from four matches. The Kolkata-based side started their campaign with a 3-1 win over FC Goa and followed it by securing impressive victories against Jamshedpur FC (3-0) and Indian Air Force (2-0). Mohammedan later played a 1-1 draw against Bengaluru FC to finish as Group A table-toppers.
On the other hand, Mumbai City FC pipped Chennaiyin FC 5-3 in a thrilling quarter-final clash to book their spot in the last four.
New summer signing Greg Stewart bagged a hat-trick while former Chennaiyin forward Lallianzuala Chhangte netted a brace to power Mumbai to a nail-biting victory in the extra-time.
The Des Buckingham-managed Mumbai City earlier finished at the top of Group B standings with seven points from four games to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
Mumbai have defeated the Indian Navy (4-1), and Rajasthan United (5-1) while being held by ATK Mohun Bagan (1-1). The Islanders also suffered a 3-4 defeat at the hands of East Bengal in the tournament so far.
Mohammedan have won the Durand Cup twice previously in 1940 and 2013, while Mumbai City are in the hunt to clinch their maiden title.
