Two-time reigning I-League champions Gokulam Kerala will take on Maldives’ Maziya Sports and Recreation Club in their second Group D match of AFC Cup 2022 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday, May 21.
Appearing in an AFC competition for the first time, Gokulam Kerala clearly showed their intent as they stunned Indian Super League (ISL) outfit ATK Mohun Bagan 4-2 in a six-goal thriller in their opening match of AFC Cup 2022 on Wednesday.
Riding high after becoming the first team to retain the I-League title, the Kerala-based club rode on Slovenian forward Luka Majcen’s brace and one goal each from Rishad Puthanveettil and substitute Jithin Subran to claim three valuable points against the fellow Indian club.
With three points from one match, Vincenzo Alberto Annese’s Gokulam Kerala are currently leading the Group D standings.
Gokulam Kerala will look to continue their impressive form against Maziya in order to improve their chances of securing the solitary spot available from Group D for the AFC Cup Inter-Zone semi-finals.
On the other hand, Miodrag Jesic’s Maziya succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against reigning Bangladesh champions Bashundhara Kings on Wednesday. Gambian footballer Nuha Marong netted the only goal of the match in the 33rd minute to help Bashundhara Kings secure three crucial points.
With the win, Bashundhara Kings are currently placed second in the standings while Maziya and ATK Mohun Bagan are third and fourth respectively.
