Organised by the English Football League, the Carabao Cup also known as the EFL Cup or the League Cup is an annual knockout competition in men’s domestic football in England.

A total of 92 teams from the English Premier League and the three tiers of the English Football League entered the 65th edition of the tournament.

All rounds in the knockout tournament are single-legged except the two semi-finals. The fate of any single-legged match is decided by penalties if the scores are level at the end of the regulation period.

The final of the Carabao Cup will be played at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London with the winning team getting a chance to play in the UEFA Conference League the next season.

United make their entry into the EFL Cup 2024-25 in the third round as teams who are involved in European football receive byes in the first two rounds of this competition.

The Red Devils are competing in the UEFA Europa League 2024-25 which takes them straight to the third round of the EFL Cup this year.

Manchester United had reached the pre-quarterfinals of the EFL Cup last year before bowing out with a 0-3 defeat to Newcastle United.

However, Manchester United had won the Carabao Cup final in the 2022-23 season against the same opponents by a 2-0 margin.

Led by Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United had a slow start to their English Premier League campaign with two wins and two losses from their four matches.

That said, United have momentum on their side after a resounding 3-0 win against Southampton in the Premier League last week.

Barnsley, meanwhile, comes into this contest with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the second round last month.

After a 0-3 loss to Stevenage, Barnsley are currently seventh with 10 points from six games in EFL League One, which is the third tier in the English football pyramid after the Premier League and the Championship.
