Manchester City host Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium in one of the most mouth-watering fixtures in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21 quarter-finals stage that kicks off on April 7, Wednesday.
The Cityzens have had a smooth run in the elite European competition so far. Not only have the Premier League giants ended the group stages at the top with 16 points but Pep Guardiola's men also advanced into the UCL quarter-final stages with a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate win against Borussia Monchengladbach in the round of 16.
Borussia Dortmund's UEFA Champions League campaign, on the other hand, has been scrappy. While Erling Haaland and Co. also topped their respective group to advance to the round of 16, defending UEFA Europa League champions Sevilla offered tough competition to the Bundesliga giants.
However, a 5-4 aggregate win against Sevilla compounded by the meteoric rise of Haaland will keep Dortmund optimistic about their chances against Manchester City. Erling Haaland has scored 20 UCL goals in 14 games, thus becoming the fastest and youngest to reach 20 UEFA Champions League goals. Watch Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund live in India!
However, City remains the favourites coming into this fixture given their superior run of form. Manchester City’s win over Leicester City during the weekend took their winning streak on the road to 15 games. Dortmund, on the other hand, come at the back of a home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt as they sit fifth in the Bundesliga table.
Interestingly though, the Bundesliga giants lead the Borussia Dortmund vs Manchester City head-to-head 1-0. Die Borussen had beaten Manchester City 1-0 the last time they had met in the UEFA Champions League in 2012, while the other fixture had ended in a 1-1 draw.
Manchester City team news
Pep Guardiola rested most of his first-team players in the crunch Premier League clash against the Foxes at the weekend and efficiently manoeuvred a 2-0 win regardless. The Spaniard comes to the tie with no injuries or suspensions in his squad.
Borussia Dortmund team news
Borussia Dortmund interim manager Edin Terzic, who continues his job in absence of a head coach, has a massive selection headache ahead of their UCL first leg tie against Manchester City. Dortmund will be without left-back Marcel Schmelzer, centre-back Dan-Axel Zagadou, midfielder Axel Witsel, striker Youssoufa Moukoko and forward Jadon Sancho - who will all be missing the match with injuries.
