On the other hand, the Syria national football team began their Intercontinental Cup 2024 campaign with a 2-0 win over Mauritius at the G. M. C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Friday.

Led by new coach Jose Lana, Syria took an early lead courtesy of an own goal from Brendon Citorah in the 32nd minute. Striker Mahmoud Al-Mawas later doubled the lead in the second half to guide his side to a convincing win in Hyderabad.

With the defeat, Mauritius have been knocked out of the tournament.

Syria, the top-ranked team (93) in the competition, will now need just a point against defending champions India while the hosts need to win on Monday in order to win the Intercontinental Cup 2024.

The last time these two sides met, Syria secured a 1-0 win over India in an AFC Asian Cup game at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar in January. Omar Khribin netted the match-winning goal in the 76th minute of the game.
