Jamshedpur FC have completed the signing of attacking midfielder Greg Stewart from Scottish champions Rangers FC, the club announced on Sunday, September 12.
Stewart, a boyhood Rangers FC supporter, joined the Gers in 2019 and went on to win the Scottish league with them under the tutelage of Steven Gerrard last term. As Rangers didn't offer him a contract extension, Jamshedpur quickly swooped in to secure his services.
"I am so excited to see what this season has in store for us. It's a new adventure for me and one I am really looking forward to," said Greg Stewart to the club website. "It's going to be an amazing experience to work under Owen Coyle and give everything on the pitch to get silverware for Jamshedpur. Just can't wait to get started,” he added.
Greg Stewart spent most of his career playing in Scotland. He started his professional career with Cowdenbeath FC in the Scottish Championship in 2010, where he went on to register 40 goals and 19 assists in 140 matches. Later, Stewart moved to Dundee FC in 2014, where he played for two seasons.
While he signed for English club Birmingham City in 2016, he completed one full season before he was shipped out on loan during the rest of his three-year contract. He returned home for loan spells with Aberdeen (2017–2018), Kilmarnock (2018–2019) and Aberdeen (2019) before securing a permanent exit from Birmingham to sign with Rangers.
In 2019, Steven Gerrard signed Stewart on a two-year deal, where the latter went on to register three goals and seven times in 33 appearances across all competitions.
Greg Stewart's versatility will be a key asset for Jamshedpur, something which head coach Owen Coyle desperately needed. "We were looking for a versatile and creative midfielder in the market to complete a menacing group of attacking players for our squad. Greg fit into that criterion perfectly. He comes with exemplary experience of playing in the biggest leagues across the UK," Coyle said.
"And of course, he had an amazing opportunity to play for one of the Glasgow giants which shows he has a strong and winning mentality. The fans can expect a lot of chances to score goals from Jamshedpur this season," the English coach added.
The 31-year-old is Jamshedpur's third overseas signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Brazilian duo Alex Lima and Eli Sabia, and Australian striker Jordan Murray.
Jamshedpur, who finished sixth in the Indian Super League last season, have handed Greg Stewart the jersey number 24.
