The FIFA World Cup 2022 is all set to get underway on Sunday, November 20 in Qatar.
The 22nd edition of the marquee quadrennial event will see 32 teams contest for the trophy. The participants are divided into eight groups of four teams each.
While Group A consists of hosts Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal and 2010 runners-up Netherlands, the defending champions France are clubbed with Australia, Denmark and Tunisia in Group D.
With this edition of the World Cup being held in the middle of the regular club season, the head coaches of the respective national teams have begun to announce their squads with just a few days to go for the commencement of the tournament.
According to the guidelines, each nation must pick at least 23 players and a maximum of 26 in their squad, three of which must be goalkeepers. The deadline for the same is Monday, November 14. Following the arrival of the squad lists, FIFA will officially publish the final lists on Tuesday, November 15.
All eyes will be on superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, with the fans set to witness their magic at the World Cup one last time. Both footballers will be playing their fifth FIFA World Cup after debuting in the 2006 edition.
Brazil star Neymar is finally looking in his prime form again after putting injury concerns behind him for this mega event. He will be raring to help his team win the World Cup this time out, after disappointing outings in 2014 and 2018.
Interestingly, veteran defender Sergio Ramos was left out of Spain’s 26-man squad by head coach Luis Enrique. The 2010-edition winner has made the most appearances for La Roja across competitions.
There are other big names as well that will miss the FIFA World Cup 2022 due to injuries.
England will miss the services of full-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell who got long-term injuries while playing for Chelsea whereas Germany will be without their attacking duo of Marco Reus and Timo Werner.
France will also have big boots to fill as Paul Pogba and N’golo Kante missed out on the flight to Qatar due to injuries. Karim Benzema and Christopher Nkunku suffered injuries during training sessions and were subsequently ruled out of the showpiece event.
