The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will start on July 20, and conclude on August 20. The ninth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
It will be for the first time that the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted in more than one country, and also the first senior World Cup to be staged across multiple confederations, as Australia is in the Asian Confederation, while New Zealand is in the Oceania Confederation.
Furthermore, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will see 32 teams compete in the quadrennial event for the first time since its inception in 1991. FIFA decided to expand the marquee women’s tournament from the previous 24 teams to 32 nations.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup will replicate the same format used for the men’s event from 1998 to 2022.
As per the format, 32 teams have been divided into eight groups of four teams each. Each team will play the other side in their group once in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Round of 16.
The knockout rounds also include four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 final to be played at Stadium Australia in Sydney on August 20.
A total of 64 matches will be played across 10 venues in Australia and New Zealand.
Eden Park, Stadium Australia, Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Forsyth Barr Stadium, Wellington Regional Stadium, FMG Stadium Waikato, Brisbane Football Stadium, Perth Rectangular Stadium, Sydney Football Stadium and Hindmarsh Stadium are the selected venues to host FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 matches.
The United States are the defending champions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having defeated Netherlands 2-0 in the 2019 final. They are also the most successful team in the tournament’s history with four titles.
