The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, to be hosted in India, will start on October 11 and run till October 30.
Hosts India, Morocco and Tanzania will make their debut in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Interestingly, India will host a FIFA tournament for the second time after the men’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.
The upcoming biennial women's youth football tournament was earlier scheduled to be held in 2020 in India but was postponed due to COVID-19.
As many as 16 teams from six confederations will participate in the seventh edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The 16 teams have been divided into four groups of four sides each.
While Group A features India, United States (US), Morocco and Brazil, Germany, Nigeria, Chile and New Zealand make up Group B.
Group C includes reigning champions Spain, Colombia, Mexico and China. Japan, Tanzania, Canada and France have been drawn in Group D of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
The Indian football team will kick-off their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 campaign against USA on October 11 before facing Morocco on October 14.
Under head coach Thomas Dennerby, India will square off against Brazil in their final Group A fixture on October 17.
Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao and Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium are the three venues that will host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 matches.
The two semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 will be hosted at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium while the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 final will be played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on October 30.
Spain defeated Mexico 2-1 in the 2018 final to clinch the previous edition of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup held in Uruguay.
North Korea are the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having won the title twice in 2008 and 2016.
South Korea (2010), France (2012) and Japan (2014) are the other teams who have won the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup once previously.
