The CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup  2022 qualifiers are back with Matchdays 15 and 16 scheduled for January 28, 29 and February 2, 2022.

Brazil and Argentina, who secured qualification in 2021, will take on qualification hopefuls Ecuador and Chile respectively in their first fixtures of the January international break.

Tite’s Brazil currently lead the standings with 35 points from 13 games, while Copa America champions Argentina are six points behind them in second spot with 29 points from 13 games. Both sides are yet to lose a game in the qualifiers.

Brazil and Argentina will be without their leading attackers Neymar and Lionel Messi for the latest round of the World Cup qualifiers. While Neymar is continuing his recovery from an ankle injury sustained in November, Messi has not been included in the Argentine squad as he continues to build match fitness after his recovery from COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani will spearhead Uruguay’s attacking line in their qualification games against Paraguay and Venezuela. New coach Diego Alonso has included uncapped players in his preliminary 50-man squad as La Celeste look to bounce back from their early setbacks in the qualifiers, which resulted in their long-serving coach Oscar Tabarez being sacked.

Matchdays 15 and 16 will see the likes of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru battle for third and fourth spot, while the fifth-best team slot is reserved for the sides that will compete in the inter-confederation play-off.
