Bremer SV will host Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the first round of DFB Pokal 2021-22 at the Weserstadion in Bremen on Wednesday, August 25.
The match was originally scheduled for the first week of August, but a serious Covid-19 outbreak at the fifth-tier German club forced the officials to move the game to the 25th.
Bremer’s place in DFB Pokal was confirmed last season when they won their eighth Bremen Cup. The team, however, hasn’t done well in the domestic competition, having been knocked out in the first round in eight of their previous nine appearances. Their best finish in the competition is a second-round exit to FC St. Pauli in the 1986-87 season.
As for Bayern Munich, they have won the DFB Pokal a record 20 times. They had an opportunity of winning it three times in a row last season but were stunned by Holstein Kiel in the second round.
Bayern will look to utilize their bench strength on Wednesday as they head into the game on the back of a hard-fought 3-2 win over Koln in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
The Bavarians fought hard for a win over their opponents on the weekend, while Bremer SV kicked off their Bremen-Liga season with a 3-1 win over Blumenthaler SV.
Bremer SV team news and injury update
Bremer SV have no injury issues whatsoever. They used a 4-2-3-1 formation against Blumenthaler SV over the weekend, but might look to go with a five-man defensive set-up against Bayern.
Bayern Munich team news and injury update
Unlike Bremer, Bayern Munich have a long list of injured players. The team is set to be without their French trio of Kingsley Coman (hamstring), Benjamin Pavard (ankle) and Lucas Hernandez (knee) while Marc Roca remains a doubt as well.
Manager Julian Nagelsmann is expected to shuffle his playing XI for this game, meaning that forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting might get a run in the first team.
