A repeat of last year’s UEFA Champions League final is on the cards as defending champions Bayern Munich host Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the first leg of the UCL quarter-final in the early hours on Thursday at the Allianz Arena.
The Bavarians, who are undefeated in the UEFA Champions League this season, are in a blistering run of form, winning each of their last seven games across Bundesliga and the UCL. The same cannot be said for PSG though as they arrive in this fixture on the back of just two victories in their last five games in all competitions. Watch Bayern vs PSG live!
Bayern Munich are also favoured by their scorching form in the competition, winning 18 of their last 19 UCL games. Furthermore, they have scored at least two goals in 17 of those matches.
Although the Bayern Munich vs PSG head-to-head record is dominated by the French team winning five of the nine meetings, the Bavarians carry the momentum.
Bayern have won all of their last three meetings against the Parisians, including the UEFA Champions League final last year where Kingsley Coman’s only goal gave them the title.
Bayern Munich team news and injury updates
The biggest absentee for Bayern Munich is their star striker Robert Lewandowski, who is ruled out of both legs owing to a knee injury he suffered during the international duty with Poland. Hansi Flick does have Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as a backup striker, but one can expect Serge Gnabry to be given the goalscoring duties.
Apart from Lewandowski, the likes of Douglas Costa and Corentin Tolisso are also out due to their respective injuries.
PSG team news and injury updates
Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG squad has been drenched in virus cases and relentless injuries. Midfielder Marco Verratti and wing-back Alessandro Florenzi will both miss the Bayern game after testing positive for the virus. Apart from the duo, Danilo Pereira, Layvin Kurzawa and Mauro Icardi are expected to miss the tie due to injury, while Leandro Paredes is suspended. Juan Bernat is unavailable with a long-term injury as well.
Considering the injury crisis, it is being reported that Pochettino might call as many as three PSG academy players, which include 19-year-old striker Kenny Nagera, 16-year-old defensive midfielder Abdoulaye Kamara, and 16-year-old attacking midfielder Ismael Gharbi.
Furthermore, PSG’s Champions League campaign will be boosted by the return of Neymar, who had missed both legs against Barcelona in the round of 16. He is, however, coming on the back of a red card against Lille in Ligue 1 at the weekend.
