The 20th edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup will kick off on Thursday, January 20, with eight-time champions China taking on Chinese Taipei at the Mumbai Football Arena. The tournament will conclude with the final taking place on February 6.
The AFC Women’s Asia Cup 2022 is set to be held in India and the matches will be played across three different venues, namely, Mumbai Football Arena (Mumbai), DY Patil Stadium (Navi Mumbai) and Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex (Pune).
A total of 12 teams will be a part of this year’s competition with Iran making their first-ever appearance. Defending champions Japan and Thailand are set to mark a record 17th appearance in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which is the most by any team.
Meanwhile, the tournament will feature the biggest-ever cast of women match officials, with a total of 32 referees set to be used. Furthermore, the AFC Women’s Asian Cup will also see Video Assistant Referee (VAR) making its debut in India. The technology will be used from the quarter-final stage onward.
The 12 participating nations have been bifurcated in three groups of four teams each. The groups are as follows:
Group A: India, China, Chinese Taipei, Iran
Group B: Australia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia
Group C: Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Myanmar
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-final while the third-placed teams from each group will battle against each other for the final two spots in the final eight.
It is important to note that the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup will also serve as the final stage of Asian qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. As many as five teams will have a chance to qualify for women world football’s showpiece event.
