The Indian women’s U-17 football team is all set to kickstart their AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup 2024 Qualifiers Round 1 campaign against the Kyrgyz Republic at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium in Bishkek on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:30 PM IST.
Part of Group F with Myanmar and the Kyrgyz Republic, India will be hoping to get their first points in the qualifiers on Wednesday. The opening match of the group witnessed Myanmar edge the Kyrgyz Republic by a 1-0 scoreline.
Having already lost to Myanmar, the Kyrgyz Republic face the prospect of being knocked out of the qualifiers should they lose to India since only one team from the group will qualify for the next round of the qualifiers.
Similarly, India has little room for error since a loss against the Kyrgyz Republic will put India in a precarious position of being knocked out of the qualifying round. Ideally, India will want to win both games but that will be easier said than done against two solid teams.
While discussing the upcoming game against the Kyrgyz Republic, India’s head coach Priya PV said, "We have a relatively new squad. For most of these girls, the SAFF U-17 Women's Championship last month was their first tournament experience.”
“After that, we had a 20-day camp in Indore, where we played some friendly games. There are a few new players in the squad as well. The girls are well-prepared for this tournament," she added.
After the Kyrgyz Republic, India will face Myanmar in their final Group F match on Friday. The winner of the group will qualify for the second round of the Qualifiers which will comprise eight teams.
These eight teams will cross swords in the second round in September 2023. The top four teams from Round 2 will then qualify for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asia Cup in Indonesia 2024. The likes of China, Japan, and South Korea have already qualified for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asia Cup.
