Indian Super League (ISL) team Jamshedpur FC is all set to take on Mumbai City FC at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri, Kerala for an AFC Champions League 2023-24 qualifying play-off match on Tuesday. The match is slated to begin at 8:30 PM IST.
The winner of this encounter between Jamshedpur and Mumbai City - the last two clubs to top the standings after the league stage of the previous two ISL seasons - will secure direct entry to the AFC Champions League 2023-24 group stage.
Mumbai City has previously played in the AFC Champions League after competing in the 2022 edition of the tournament.
The Islanders were just the second team from India to play in Asia’s top club tournament after FC Goa and they beat Iraqi outfit Air Force Club to become the first Indian club to win a group stage game in the competition.
Mumbai City FC won twice against Air Force Club and even held UAE’s Al Jazira in the previous edition of the AFC Champions League. They eventually finished second in their group with seven points as they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the next round.
This time around, the Islanders head into the playoff match as holders of the ISL League WInners Shield 2022-23. They topped the league stage but were knocked out in the ISL semi-finals by eventual finalists Bengaluru FC in a penalty shootout.
Meanwhile, Jamshedpur head into this contest after finishing in the 10th spot in ISl 2022-23. They couldn’t beat Mumbai City FC in both their league games, drawing once and losing the other.
As far as the head-to-head between these sides go, Jamshedpur has a slight edge over Mumbai having won five of the 12 encounters between them. Mumbai has won four times, while three matches finished in a draw.
