Free Fire, a highly popular eSports battle royale video game, is renowned for its fast-paced action and strategic gameplay, boasting a vast and dedicated fan base globally.

Created and released by Garena, a Singaporean game developer, Free Fire initially launched on December 8, 2017, first targeting Android and iOS platforms.

The core gameplay centers around two primary modes. These are the Battle Royale, where as many as 50 players compete to be the last one standing on an island.

The other mode known as the Clash Squad is a team-based mode with two teams of four players battling in a series of matches to determine the winner.

Besides these two game modes, Free Fire  has been known to offer more than 15 game modes, including Team Deathmatch, Clash Squad, Big Head, Explosive Jump, Cold Steel, Zombie Hunt, Rampage, and Pet Mania in the past.

That said, modes other than Battle Royale, Clash Squad, and Lone Wolf are exclusively available during special events.

A truly in-demand game, Free Fire boasts a massive fanbase the world over with an estimate of 187 million players globally as of January 2024.

One of the most popular eSports after BGMI, Free Fire though was banned by the Indian government as part of 54 Chinese applications citing threats to national security as well as privacy and espionage concerns in February 2022.

However, in September of last year, Garena announced that Free Fire will return to India, rebranded as Free Fire India.

The Indian version of  the game will be in accordance with the Indian audience and players. The new version will have safety features like prompts and reminders to take breaks, parental control, time limits, and more.

However, Garena Free Fire is yet to make its return to the Indian market after facing several postponements.

Having said that, it hasn’t stopped Indian gamers from participating in international tournaments to demonstrate their gaming prowess.

Several Free Fire events have been hosted at the international level in recent months with many top Indian Free Fire players proving their worth on such occasions.
