Australia’s domestic One Day Championship saw an incredible win for the Victoria side when they snatched a one-run win from the jaws of defeat against Tasmania in the Marsh One Day Cup match at WACA, Perth.
It was looking like a sure win for the Tasmania side who were chasing a target of 186 and easily managed to get to 172 for four by the 39th over. Tasmania were eying a bonus point knowing that they could achieve the target in 40 overs. Beau Webster gave away his wicket after making 20 runs off 25 balls trying to clear the boundary line but found the fielder underneath.
Tasmania still had Ben McDermott who opened the batting for them and had already completed his half-century. He hit Victoria bowler Chris Tremain for six off the last ball of the 39th over to move Tasmania closer to the win. They required just five runs to win with six wickets in hand and six balls to still secure a bonus point.
Jackson Coleman came into bowl the 40th over in which he got rid off James Faulkner, who was trying to hit him over the third man but was caught and also the well settled McDermott, who had scored 78 runs off 108 balls. He was caught as well after mistiming his pull shot.
With both new batsmen on the crease, Coleman picked the third wicket of his over when he sent Gurinder Sandhu back to the pavilion to reduce Tasmania to 183 for eight at the end of the over. With the chance of getting a bonus point already gone, they needed three runs from 60 balls but just had 2 wickets in hand.
Just two overs ago, none of the Victorian player would have thought of a win in this game, but the batting collapse must have given them the confidence of pulling out something special this late in the match.
The tail-enders could only manage to get just one run of the three and Termain managed to snatch the win finally when he got Jackson Bird and Nathan Ellis out. It led to wild celebrations in the middle, something which the Victorian players definitely deserved.
