Thailand Women’s cricket team, on Saturday, entered the record books by winning their 17th successive T20 international game, which is now the best streak in the shortest format of the game.
Plying their trade in the ongoing quadrangular series, held in the Netherlands, Thailand ripped the host nation apart, bowling them out for a mere 54 in 17.5 overs. In turn, an unbeaten knock of 42 in 31 deliveries from Nattakan Chantam guided Thailand to chase down the target in a mere eight overs, with as many wickets intact.
The previous record of 16 consecutive wins was held by Australia Women, who managed their unbeaten streak between March 2014 and August 2015. Furthermore, apart from Thailand, four other teams have managed to win 10 or more successive T20Is on the trot; England and Zimbabwe (14), and New Zealand (12). Also apart from their 16-match streak, Australia also registered 12 consecutive wins last year.
As for Thailand, their streak began in July 2018 when they defeated United Arab Emirates Women by seven wickets in the second play-off semi-final of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier.
As far as the ongoing quadrangular series is concerned, Thailand defeated Scotland Women by 74 runs in their tournament opener, and the victory was followed by successfully defending a target of mere 55 runs against Ireland Women.
Thailand’s bowling has been quite impressive of late, with right-arm pacer Nattaya Boochatam impressing amongst the lot. Against the Netherlands, she picked three wickets while conceding as many runs in 2.5 overs.
