The Indian cricket team became the third side to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals after they defeated Australia by 24 runs in their final Super 8 clash at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia on Monday, June 24.

Put in to bat, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma’s 92 off 41 balls along with contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (31), Shivam Dube (28) and Hardik Pandya (27) to post 205/5 in their 20 overs.

Later, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh picked up three wickets while left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav bagged two crucial wickets to restrict Australia to 181/7 in their allotted overs to guide India to a comprehensive win in Saint Lucia.

With wins over Afghanistan and Bangladesh, India finished at the top of the Super 8 Group 1 standings with six points from three games to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals.

Meanwhile, South Africa and England have also qualified for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals from Super 8 Group 2.

Having registered three wins in three games, South Africa topped Super 8 Group 2 standings with six points.

England finished as the second-placed team in Super 8 Group 2 standings with two wins and one loss.

The Rohit Sharma-led India will now take on England in the second T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 27.

On the other hand, Australia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are still in contention for a T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final berth from Super 8 Group 1.

The Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan will need to beat Bangladesh to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final.

How can Bangladesh qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final

Despite losing both their Super 8 matches, Bangladesh are still contention for a T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final spot. Led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh are currently languishing at the bottom of the Super 8 Group 1 standings. Bangladesh can still qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals if they win by a big margin against Afghanistan. They need to win by at least 61 runs or chase in 13 overs if batting second.

After their defeat against India, Australia’s dreams of a semi-final spot now rests on the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh game. With a net run rate of -0.331, Australia are currently placed second in the Super 8 Group 1 standings with two points from three games. The Mitchell March-led Australia will qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals if Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by less than 61 runs or chase the required target after 13 overs.
