The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021-22 will be the thirteenth edition of India’s premier domestic T20 competition as it commences on November 4. The final will be played on November 22.
The tournament will be a part of the ongoing Indian domestic cricket season as per the directives of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The teams are divided into five Elite groups of six teams each and one Plate Group with eight teams. A total of 149 matches will be played across 38 participating teams. Each team will play five matches in the group stages, irrespective of the number of teams in the group.
The tournament will be played in a round-robin format and the winners of each Elite Group will progress directly to the quarter-finals, while the second-placed teams and the winner of the Plate Group will play in preliminary quarter-finals to determine the final eight teams.
Tamil Nadu are the defending champions of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy having won the title under Dinesh Karthik.
One player transfer was approved before the start of the season as Deepak Hooda left Baroda and shifted base to Rajasthan.
