The Super Smash 2022-23, New Zealand’s premier domestic T20 competition will start on December 23.
The tournament will be played with a few mini breaks to accommodate New Zealand’s international assignments and the final of the Super Smash 2022-23 will be February 11, 2023.
Northern Districts, Canterbury, Central Stags, Wellington Firebirds, Otago Volts and Auckland Aces are the six teams competing for the title.
Canterbury won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2005-06. Auckland Aces, who lost the first edition final, won the Super Smash four times alongside Wellington Firebirds, making them the most successful teams of this competition.
George Worker is the highest run-scorer in Super Smash and is closing in on the 3,000 mark in this competition (2,949 runs in 120 matches). Among the bowlers, Andrew Ellis leads the way with 109 wickets in 100 matches.
The Northern Districts will be entering the upcoming tournament as the defending champions. They defeated Canterbury Kings in a closely-contested final to win the Super Smash title for the third time.
The 2022-23 edition of the tournament will be played in a double round-robin format, where each team will be taking on the others twice. The group stages will culminate on February 6.
Teams finishing second and third on the table will play a preliminary final. It’s winner will take on the first-placed team, who will reach the final directly.
