The T20I series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will be followed by a three-match ODI series.
New Zealand travel to Sri Lanka after registering a clean sweep over India in the three-match Test series. This was the first Test series win for the Kiwis on Indian soil and it was also the first instance that India lost all the matches in a home Test series that had three or more matches.
Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner, who picked up 13 wickets in New Zealand’s win in the second Test against India in Pune, was named captain of the 15-member squad for both the T20I and the ODI series.
Bowling all-rounder Nathan Smith and wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay received their maiden call-up to the New Zealand national side after impressive performances in the domestic white-ball tournaments with Wellington and Canterbury, respectively, last season.
Glenn Phillips, Will Young, Ish Sodhi, Jacob Duffy and Mark Chapman are the other five players apart from Santner who were part of the New Zealand Test team for the India series.
Michael Bracewell, who left India after the first Test for the birth of his second child, will rejoin the New Zealand white-ball squad. Lockie Ferguson is also back in the mix and will spearhead the Kiwi pace attack.
New Zealand will be playing a T20I for the first time after their disappointing group stage exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean in June.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka steps into the contest after registering identical 2-1 series wins over the West Indies in both white-ball formats at home. The Lankans also beat the Kiwis 2-0 in the two-Test series in September.
Charith Asalanka will continue to lead the same 17-member squad that played in the T20Is against the Windies. The spin quartet of Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Jeffrey Vandersay and Maheesh Theekshana will play a key role yet again along with all-rounders Asalanka and Kamindu Mendis.
Matheesha Pathirana will lead the Sri Lankan pace attack which will also have Nuwan Thushara and Chamindu Wickramasinghe in the mix.
Currently, New Zealand are ranked fifth in the ICC men’s T20I rankings whereas Sri Lanka are in eighth place as per the latest list.
