Promising India cricket team opener Shubman Gill is a doubt for the first Test versus England at Nottingham due to a lower leg injury. Not much has been made official about the injury or the timing of it though.
The upcoming five-match Test series marks the start of the second cycle of the World Test Championship with the Pataudi Trophy being the first series of the second edition.
The opening batsman was a certainty to start in the playing XI given his recent performances and his absence would be a major blow to the team.
Though the first Test is almost five weeks away and the team has started adapting to the English summer, young Gill’s chances of playing seem to be bleak.
In his nascent career of just eight Tests so far, Gill has scored 414 runs with three fifties to his name.
It is still not clear if he will remain a part of the touring party and enter the scheme of things later. Gill will be monitored by Team India physio Nitin Patel and strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai.
The squad already has back-up in the form of Karnataka duo Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul, and Abhimanyu Easwaran as a stand-by player. While Agarwal has slipped to becoming the first backup option, Rahul last played a Test against West Indies in 2019.
