The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign will commence on October 11 and will run till March 2, 2025.
Organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the 90th edition of Ranji Trophy - the premier domestic first-class competition in India - will feature 38 teams that will vie for the title over the course of 135 matches.
The first-round matches will be played between October 11 and October 14. The Ranji Trophy is split into two divisions - Elite and Plate- with 32 teams in the Elite category and six teams in the Plate League.
The teams in the Elite category have been divided into four groups, comprising eight teams each.
All the group stage matches will be held over four days with the knockouts extending to five days. However, the Plate League will only have four-day matches, including the final.
Ranji Trophy 2024-25 teams and groups
Elite Group A: Baroda, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mumbai, Odisha, Services and Tripura
Elite Group B: Andhra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Vidarbha
Elite Group C: Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh
Elite Group D: Assam, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Railways, Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu
Plate: Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim
The Elite division will have four groups with eight teams in each of them. Each team will play a game against every opponent in the same group in a single round-robin format with a total of four home and three away matches.
The top two teams from each Elite Group will proceed to play the quarter-finals with the eventual winners moving onto the semi-finals and final subsequently.
Meanwhile, the Plate Division will be a single group affair with each team playing once against the other five opponents. The top two teams will meet in the final of the Plate League and also gain promotion to next year’s Elite League.
Two teams with the least points out of the four bottom-placed teams in the Elite Group will get relegated to the Plate League next season.
The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 will be conducted over an extended period with both the white-ball domestic tournaments being scheduled in between. Hence the final of the Ranji Trophy is scheduled to happen from February 26 to March 2, 2025.
Mumbai are the defending champions of the Ranji Trophy, winning their 42nd domestic title last year by beating Vidarbha in the final by 169 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in March 2024.
Mumbai will start their Ranji Trophy campaign this year on a victorious note after getting the better of Rest of India in the Irani Cup 2024 earlier this month.
