Mumbai will lock horns with the Rest of India team in the Irani Cup 2024 match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
The Mumbai vs Rest of India, Irani Cup 2024 will start at 9:30 IST on Tuesday, October 1. The one-off match will be played from October 1-5.
The Irani Cup 2024 was originally scheduled to be held in Mumbai, but it was later moved to Lucknow due to persistent rains in Mumbai.
Organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Irani Cup is an annual first-class cricket tournament played between the winners of the Ranji Trophy and a Rest of India cricket team. The Rest of India team includes players from Ranji teams of various states.
Named after the late BCCI president Zal R. Irani, the first edition of the Irani Cup was held during the 1959-60 season to mark the completion of 25 years of the Ranji Trophy championship.
Mumbai qualified for the 61st edition of the Irani Cup after they defeated Vidarbha by 169 runs in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final at the Wankhede Stadium in March. With the dominating win, Mumbai clinched their 42nd Ranji Trophy title, the most by any team in the tournament’s history.
Ajinkya Rahane will lead Mumbai in the one-off first-class match against Rest of India. The star-studded Mumbai squad also features the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan and Shardul Thakur.
Ahead of the crucial encounter, Mumbai have suffered a massive blow as talented Musheer Khan has been ruled out of the Irani Cup 2024 after he suffered a fracture in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named the captain of the Rest of India team. Apart from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Devdutt Padikkal and B Sai Sudharsan are the other frontline openers included in the squad.
Baroda's Shashwat Rawat and Ricky Bhui of Andhra have also been rewarded for their impressive performances in the recently-concluded Duleep Trophy.
In the bowling department, Prasidh Krishna, Mukesh Kumar, Yash Dayal and Khaleel Ahmed are the fast bowlers added in the Rest of India squad. Rahul Chahar, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain are the spin-bowling options in the formidable RoI squad.
Led by Hanuma Vihari, Rest of India won the previous edition of the Irani Cup after beating Saurashtra by a massive 175 runs in October 2023.
Defending champions Rest of India are also the most successful team in the Irani Cup history with 30 titles while Mumbai have won the competition on 14 occasions.
