Dhoni missed both India’s tour of West Indies and home series against South Africa. Now, his extension would mean that he will miss the Vijay Hazare Trophy and T20I home series against Bangladesh as well.
Dhoni was last seen wearing the Indian colors in 2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final, where India dramatically lost to New Zealand by 18 runs. Since then, there have been speculations of him announcing his retirement from international cricket, but no official statement has been released by BCCI or Dhoni himself.
His fans will have to wait a bit more to see him play for the national side. If he returns after November, he will be up for selection and make a comeback when West Indies come visiting for a T20I series in December.
Currently, left-handed batsman and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant stands behind the wickets for the Indian side and is trying to establish himself on Dhoni’s long-held position. His recent form has raised some concerns of him taking over, but many see him as the best successor for the gloves.
