Kolkata, who have won the Indian T20 League title twice (2012 and 2014), have in recent seasons, slipped away from their form of those glory days, with the best finish of third on two occasions their best effort since then.
The way Indian T20 League 2020 started for them, however, it didn't look like that downturn was going to be reversed any time soon, as they endured a severe drubbing at the hands of their perennial tormentors Mumbai in their season's first match, where they lost by 49 runs.
None of their batsmen were able to manage even a fifty in that opening match, with players like Andre Russell and Eoin Morgan petering out with a whimper.
However, their second match saw a different KOL, as they went to work on Hyderabad and came away with a sweet seven-wicket victory and followed that up with another win over Rajasthan.
Shubman Gill remains the highest run-scorer for KOL in Indian T20 League 2020 so far. Playing steadily and methodically, he has been one of KOL's most dependable batsmen this season, along with the venerable Eoin Morgan.
And while Nitish Rana and has impressed as well, former skipper Dinesh Karthik has been underwhelming at the crease. Andre Russell's form continues to be fickle, while new captain Eoin Morgan has picked up the pace.
