England batsman Jason Roy has been ruled out of their 2019 ICC World Cup tie against Australia owing to a hamstring injury.

Roy, 28, tore his left hamstring during England’s eight-wicket victory over West Indies on June 14, and went on to miss the Afghanistan as well as the Sri Lanka game. Although the early reports said he is set for a return against Australia, it is now confirmed that he will rather continue his rehabilitation to be back for the India clash on Sunday.

The 28-year-old arrived at the Lord’s after having a scan at the Fortius Clinic in London on Monday. And although he hit the nets as part of his recovery, he didn’t bat during the tenure. Speaking about his return, England head coach Trevor Bayliss had previously said the 28-year-old will be rushed in any case.

"We're not going to risk him, that's for sure," the Australian was quoted by BBC.

"We'll play each game as it comes and get the medical people to let us know whether they think he is right for the next game."

In turn, James Vince is expected to continue as the opening partner of Jonny Bairstow. The 28-year-old though hasn’t enjoyed a fruitful outing at the World Cup, scoring just 26 and 14 in two innings. Meanwhile, England need to win at least one of their final three group stage games if they are to make it to the semi-final.

England take on the defending champions of Tuesday at Lord’s in a bid to improve their position for a spot in the semi-final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
