The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon invite applications for the post of head coach of the Indian cricket team.
Current Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure will come to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
Rahul Dravid was appointed India’s head coach in November 2021. He was later given an extension till the upcoming T20 World Cup after his two-year contract expired after India’s heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in November.
“We will call for applications in the next few days. Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end in June. If he wants to reapply, he can,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said during a media interaction at the BCCI headquarters.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the national governing body of cricket in India, is responsible for the India cricket team's head coach selection process.
The appointment process for India’s head coach begins with inviting applications for the post.
BCCI then appoints its Cricket Advisory Committee to appoint the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.
For example, Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy were part of the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee that selected India’s head coach in 2019.
India cricket team's head coach eligibility criteria
The last time the BCCI appointed a head coach in 2021, these were some of the eligibility criteria for the post.
- The candidate should have played at least 30 Test matches or 50 One-Day internationals (ODIs).
- Should have been a head coach of a full member Test playing nation for a minimum period of 2 years.
- Should have been a head coach of an associate member/Indian T20 League team or equivalent international leagues/first class teams/ national A teams, for a minimum period of 3 years.
- Should hold a BCCI level 3 or equivalent certification.
- The candidate should be below 60 years of age at the time of appointment.
India cricket team's head coach salary
The Indian cricket team’s head coach salary can go up to INR 10-12 crores annually.
Rahul Dravid is currently paid INR 12 crore per annum as the head coach of Team India in all international formats.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the new head coach will be given a three-year contract till ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
“We are looking for a long-term coach for three years,” Shah said.
“There is no precedent of different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of all-format players. Ultimately, it will be the Cricket Advisory Committee's (CAC) call. I have to implement what they decide,” he added.
Meanwhile, India will be in action in the T20 World Cup 2024, which will be starting on June 2 (IST) in the United States and West Indies.
