South African spinner Imran Tahir has joined Surrey for their upcoming quest of the Vitality T20 Blast, the club on Tuesday (May 14) confirmed. That being said, the 40-year-old will become Surrey’s second overseas player alongside the Australian captain, Aaron Finch.

Tahir, who is a part of South Africa’s World Cup squad, will join his new teammates after the tournament and will be available for the entirety of Vitality Blast.

"I'm always looking for new and exciting opportunities," said Tahir. "That's how I see the chance to play with one of the most talented playing groups in county cricket.

"When I heard Alec Stewart had asked after me, it was an easy decision. Surrey are a massive club and it will be great if I can contribute to helping them win another trophy this summer at the Kia Oval."

Furthermore, he will also be available for Surrey’s opening round of fixture against Essex on July 19. "Imran is a proven match winner and with his vast experience of international, county and franchise cricket will be a huge asset to us," said Surrey’s Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart.

Tahir, of late, played an integral role in the recently concluded Indian T20 League for the Chennai franchise, who reached the final of the tournament. With 26 wickets in 17 games, the veteran spinner earned the purple cap for most wickets.

As far as domestic leagues are concerned, Tahir has played in the likes of Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League, Mzansi Super League and Bangladesh Premier League in the past. He also has an experience of six seasons of English domestic tournament.
